Problems and Opportunities
Priority Problems include drought, especially where irrigation infrastructure is limiting. Lack of access to improved seed and the high price of inputs (especially fertilizer) are problems limiting maize production.

In Afghanistan, common maize pests are: maize stem borer, corn armyworm, corn leafhopper, cutworms, fusarium ear and stalk rot diseases, leaf blight, common smut, head smut,and common rust.
